Question

1) Discuss with example the solubility of ionic compounds?

Answer

\longmapstoIonic compounds are generally soluble in polar solvents ( such as water ) , but are insoluble in non - polar solvents ( such as CS₂ , CCI₄ , benzene etc ). For example , NaCI is soluble in water but insoluble in benzene .

Question

Why are ionic compounds hard in nature ?

Answer

\longmapsto In ionic compounds , large number of oppositely charged ions are held together by strong electrostatic force of attraction which results in the formation of large crystal lattices. The ions remain closely packed in the crystal and the intermolecular spce between them is very small . Hardness of an ionic compound is due to the aggregation of large number of ions in a very small space .
