SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

  • To Draw a graph to represent the rule of multiplication by 5 of all positive numbers including 0.

  • From the graph, find the product of 5 and 3.5

EVALUATION

Let x be the number to be multiplied by 5 and y be the number obtained

So by the given condition

y = 5 × x

 \sf{ \implies \: y = 5x} \:  \:  -  -  - (1)

Which represents the equation of a line going through the origin

We have to find the product of 5 and 3.5

Here x = 3.5

In the graph A represents the the point (3.5,0)

Now if we draw a perpendicular at the point A(3.5,0) , it intersects the line at B(3.5,17.5)

Accordingly we get y = 17.5

So the required product = 17.5

Also we can verify the result from Equation 1

In Equation 1 putting x = 3.5 we get

y = 5 × 3.5 = 17.5

So the required product = 17.5
