Given:
Two cars A and B move away from each other on a straight line each with velocity 10 m/s. They have an initial separation of 1000 metres.
To draw:
The Displacement-Time graph.
Solution:
- We shall draw the displacement time curve for both cars on the same graph, as it will help in comparison.
- Since they are separated by 1000 m , the initial gap between the curves will be 1000m on the graph.
- Since the cars move with constant velocity (and no acceleration), the curves will be a straight line.
- Lets consider that car A is moving right and car B is moving left. Considering the rightward direction to be positive.
The green line on the graph indicates the curve.

For the time interval of 4h,
Displacement of car A, D
A
=160km
Velocity of car A, v
A
= 4h
160km
=40km/h
Displacement of car B, D
B
=120km−40km=80km
Velocity of car B, v
B = 4h
80km
=20km/h
