These lines are from Francis Bacon’s essay, “On Revenge”.
Francis Bacon adopts a very logical and morally correct perspective in his essay. He feels that even though seeking revenge sounds right, it is the wrong thing to do. It is true that by taking revenge a person can get even with his enemy. It is an eye for an eye. However, it is only when a person lets good sense prevail, and allows the feeling of revenge to p_ass, that the person becomes a better being than his enemy. Seeking revenge is not a trait of a dignified human being. In fact having the ability to keep oneself away from the feeling of revenge indicates great character, much like that of a prince, who conducts himself with dignity.
