Answer:

When sodium reacts with chlorine, it transfers its one outermost electron to the chlorine atom. By losing one electron, sodium atom forms a sodium ion (Na+) and by gaining one electron, the chlorine atom forms a chloride ion (Cl-). Sodium ion has positive charge whereas chloride ions have negative charge.

Answer:

In formation of sodium chloride:

Sodium contains 1 electron in its valence shell and can lose this electron to form a cation.

Chloride contains 7 electrons in its valence shell and can gain one electron to form a anion.

THE CATION AND ANION BEING OPPOSITELY CHARGED ATTRACT EACH OTHER

This results in formation of an electrovalent bond and Sodium chloride is formed
