1. a . pilots are supposed to fly high and not be scared of heights . the irony is that the pilot is scared of heights

b. a cobbler is a person who is supposed to make and /or fix problems related to shoes, the irony is that his own kids dont have shoes

c. the word doctor is used , so i can say that although he knows the risks of cigarettes , he smokes them.

2. a the writer has personified the flood by saying that the flood has swallowed the village. floods cant swallow but the term is used to show that it has flooded places
