+2a-8 = 0

+4a-2a-8= 0

a(a+4)-2(a+4)=0

(a+4)(a-2)=0

Either

a+4 = 0

a= -4

or

a-2 = 0

a= 2

Answer:

a = 4 or -2

Step-by-step explanation:

 \sqrt{10}  =  \sqrt{ {(4 - 3)}^{2} +  {(1 - a)}^{2}  }  \\ 10 = 1 + ( {1}^{2}  +  {a}^{2}  - 2 \times 1 \times a) \\ 10 - 2 =  {a}^{2} + 2 a \\  {a}^{2}  + 2a - 8 = 0 \\ a = 4 \: or \:  - 2
