Chief characteristics of the soil are studied with the help of the soil profile.

Explanation:

There are three types of soil based on size, proportion and arrangement of soil particles:-

  • Sandy Soil:- 80% or more sand with 20% or less slit or clay. They have poor water-holding capacity and are porous and loose.
  • Clay Soil:- 40-50% clay with 50-60% slit and little sand may be present. They have the high water-holding capacity and abundant capillary pores.
  • Loam Soil:- 20% clay, 40% sand and 40% slit. These type of soil have a moderate water-holding capacity and are moderately porous.

The soil with pH 5.5 to 5.6 provides abundant nutrients to plants. But there are few plants have the ability to grow in slightly acidic or alkaline soil.
