Given:

Unbalanced equation: NaNO₃ → NaNO₂ + O₂

NaNO₃ = 120gm

To find:

Find out the amount of O₂ gas released when 120 gm of NaNO₃ is heated. Also, find the amount of NaNO₂ produced.

Solution:

First balance the given equation.

2NaNO₃ → 2NaNO₂ + O₂

Na = 22.98977 g/mol

N = 14.0067 g/mol

O = 15.9994 g/mol

NaNO₃ = 22.98977 + 14.0067 + 3(15.9994) = 84.99467 g/mol

NaNO₂ = 22.98977 + 14.0067 + 2(15.9994) = 68.99527 g/mol

O₂ = 2(15.9994) = 31.9988 g/mol

2NaNO₃          →          2NaNO₂          +          O₂

2×84.99467               2×68.99527                31.9988

169.98934                  137.99054

169.98934 g/mol of NaNO₃ → 31.9988 g/mol of O₂

∴ 1 g/mol of NaNO₃ → 31.9988 / 169.98934 of O₂

∴ 120 gm of NaNO₃ → 31.9988 / 169.98934 × 120 of O₂

                                = 22.5888 gm of O₂

Therefore, 22.5888 gm O₂ gas is when 120 gm of NaNO₃ is heated.

169.98934 g/mol of NaNO₃ → 137.99054 g/mol of NaNO₂

∴ 1 g/mol of NaNO₃ → 137.99054 / 169.98934 of NaNO₂

∴ 120 gm of NaNO₃ → 137.99054 / 169.98934 × 120 of NaNO₂

                                 = 97.4112 gm of NaNO₂

Therefore, 97.4112 gm of NaNO₂ is produced.
