The H.C.F. of the numbers 40 and 56 is 8.

Given:-

The numbers 40 and 56 are given.

To Find:-

HCF of numbers 40 and 56.

Solution:-

To find the HCF by division method we first divide the larger number by the smaller number

between 56 and 40, 56 is larger so we divide it by 40

Using Euclid's Division Lemma

Dividend= Divisor*Quotient+ Remainder

56= 40×1+16

Step2 Next, we divide the divisor by the remainder of the previous division and repeat this same procedure till the remainder becomes zero. The divisor which does not leave a remainder is the H.C.F of the numbers

Dividing 40 by 16

40= 16×2+8

Dividing 16 by 8

16= 8×2+0

Dividing by 8 does not leave a remainder. So, 8 is the H.C.F.

Hence, H.C.F. of 40 and 56 is 8.
