x + 3y = 22

x + 7y = 35

subtract equation 1 from equation 2

4y = 13

y = 13 / 4

we know that x + 3y = 22

substitute y value in first equation

x + 3 ( 13 / 4 ) = 22

x + 36 / 4 = 22

x = 22 - (36/4)

x = 52 /4

x = 13
