1. "First meiotic division is the reduction division". What does the word 'reduction' refer to in this statement? 2. "Gametes must be produced by meiosis for sexual reproduction". Why is it so?

1.First meiotic division is the reduction division, here "*reduction*" refer to the numbers of chromosomes, which are halved(reduced to half) in meiotic division.. 2.Gametes must be produced by Meiosis for sexual reproduction as the Haploid male and female gametes(having half number of chromosomes) when unite in fertilization,the resultant zygote must carry the normal number of chromosomes (Deploid).Hope it helps......
