Given :

Zener diode is ideal.

Breakdown voltage = 6V

Find :

Output Voltage V₀

Solution :

1) During forward bias

Vd = 0

2) During reverse

Vz > |Vd| > 0

Vd = Vr

3) Breakdown region

|Vd| > Vz

Vd = Vz but current increases

During positive half cycle

Vin = +ve     Reversed biased

i) Vin < Vz

V₀ = Vin

Vf = Vin - Vd = 0V

ii) Vin ≥ Vz

Vd = Vz

Vf = Vin - V₀

Vf = Vin - Vz

Vf = 12 - 6

Vf = 6V

During negative half cycle

Vin = -ve     Forward biased

Vd = 0V

Vr = Vin - Vd

Vr = 12 - 0

Vr = 12V
