Answer:

if x-1 is a factor then,

x-1=0

x=1

now put this value in p(x)

1. p(1)=(1)^3-7(1)^2+14(1)-(8)

= 1-7+14-8

= 7-7

=0

hence, x-1 is the factor of p(x)=x^3 - 7x^2 + 14x^2-8

2. p(1)= (1)^3+4(1)^2+(1)-6

=3+4+1-6

=5-3

=2

hence , x-1 is not the factor of p(x)= x^3+4x^2+x-6
