1 g of solid sodium chloride is taken in a clean and dry test tube and 2 mL of conc. sulphuric acid is
added to it. If the gas evolved is tested first with dry and then with wet blue litmus paper, in which
case will the litmus paper change colour? Give reason for your answer. What inference can be drawn
about the nature of the evolved gas? Support your answer with chemical equation for the reaction. 3

Answer:

In second case the litmus paper will change it's colour

Explanation:

Reaction-> NaCl +H2So4 ------> (when heated) 2HCl+ Na2So4

In first case the litmus papaer does not change it's colour because for change the litmus paper colour H+ ion or OH- ion will be release but in this case the dry HCl does not release H+ ion on dry litmus paper

While in second case the wet litmus will change the colour because when dry HCl will react to wet litmus paper it will release H+ ion.
