Answer:

a) The colour of the alluvial soils varies from the light grey to ash grey. Its shades depend on the depth of the deposition, the texture of the materials, and the time taken for attaining maturity.

b) Alluvial soil differs in texture because it has been formed due to erosional, transportation and deposition activities of the Himalayan rivers.

c) Nearly all types of crops grow well in riverine ( Alluvial ) soil, as its fertile and has good quality of humus and minerals.

d) Bhangar soils are less fertile as they are above flood level whereas Khadar soils are more fertile as they are below flood level.

e) The black soil is found in the Deccan trap region because this region is formed due to the deposition of lava produced by the volcanic eruption.

f) Nature of soil depend upon several factors such as nature of parent rocks, temperature, humidity, rainfall etc. India has a vast longitudnal and latitudnal extent and hence every region has different climatic conditions. This is the reason why different regions have different types of soil.

g) Laterite soils are used as a building material because they become hard like iron when exposed to air. So, they are used as a building material.

h) Black soil is known for its self ploughing nature because it is a clayey soil and has much moisture in it. It also develops cracks during summers which exposes it to sunlight and water from rains.

i) Laterite soil is formed under conditions of high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry periods, which leads to leaching of soil. The mechanism of leaching involves acid dissolving the minerals found in the parent rock.

j) Deltaic alluvium (Khadar) is more fertile than coastal alluvium (Bhangar) as new layers are deposited year after year during monsoonal floods.

k) Black soil is also called cotton soil or regur soil. It is black in color and ideal for growing cotton. It is rich in soil nutrients like calcium carbonate, magnesium, potash, and lime, but poor in phosphoric content.
