2. Thunder is caused by the rapid expansion of the air surrounding the path of a lightning bolt. As lightning connects to the ground from the clouds, a second stroke of lightning will return from the ground to the clouds, following the same channel as the first strike.
Lightning is an electrical discharge caused by imbalances between storm clouds and the ground, or within the clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs within the clouds. Lightning is extremely hot—a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. This heat causes surrounding air to rapidly expand and vibrate, which creates the pealing thunder we hear a short time after seeing a lightning flash.
3. If a storm is accompanied, then we should take the following measures :-
●Avoid water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
●Avoid electronic equipment of all types. Lightning can travel through electrical systems and radio and television reception systems.
●Avoid corded phones.
●Avoid concrete floors and walls
4. The water requires heat when it changes from liquid to Vapour state. The water gives back heat when vapour condenses into liquid and a very low pressure area is created. This is how a thunderstorm becomes a cyclone. Cyclones are produced over the sea in tropical areas when the air is warm and humid.
5. The destruction caused by cyclones depends on its intensity, location, and size. In forest regions, the trees get uprooted and canopies get affected. In coastal regions, the banks and embankments get eroded. In deserts, the sand dunes get reshaped whereas in mountainous regions mudslides and landslides occur .
6. Safety measures we should take during a cyclone are as follows :-
●Turn off all electricity, gas and water; unplug all appliances.
● Keep your emergency kit close at hand.
● Bring your family into the strongest part of the house.
● Keep listening to the radio for cyclone updates.
● If the building begins to break up, shelter under a strong table, bench or heavy mattress.
