1. Give reasons for the following:
(a) The electric wires are made of copper.
(b) Gold and silver are used for making jewellery.

Answer:

a.because it conduct electricity with high flexibility and very little resistance.

b. gold and silver are extremely malleable and ductile as a result of which it can be converted into alloy to make Jewellery .

c. graphite is an electric conductor consequently useful in such application as Arc lamp electrodes it can conduct electricity due to the electron delocalization within the carbon layers.

a) The electric wire are made up of copper as it is a good conductor of electricity, highly ductile and easily available and hence cheaper than other metals

b) Gold and silver are used for making jewellery as they are the only metal that do not oxidize in the atmosphere (also platinum)

c) Graphite is used for making electrodes in electric cells because it has free electrons and good conductor of electricity.
