The general formula of a hydrated salt is MxNy. nH2O.

sodium sulfate decahydrate, Na2SO4∙10H2O

2.All the hydrates lose water upon heating. Above 320 °C only the anhydrous form is stable. It decomposes without melting at 1124°C into magnesium oxide (MgO) and sulfur trioxide (SO3).

3. Hygroscopy. A hygroscopic substance is one that readily attracts water from its surroundings, through either absorption or adsorption. Examples include honey, glycerin, ethanol, methanol, concentrated sulfuric acid, and concentrated sodium hydroxide (lye).
