These arguments are not enough to conclude that he are selfish because before leaving he gave Ratan his whole month's salary retaining only a trifle for his travelling expenses and when he left his village behind him he wanted to go back and bring her away . And one more argument that proves that he was not selfish is when he said that my successor will look after you which means that he cared for Ratan.
