1. How can you tell that a gas is given off in this experiment?

As you can see that there are bubbles coming out of limewater, it indicates that a gas is being released.

By the way, gas would be CO2.

REACTION:

CaCO3+2HCl=CaCl2+CO2+H2O.

Also the CO2 will turn the limewater solution milky.
