Give you an example: My maternal ancestors were not "Americans" prior to the Dawes Act. They were not U.S. citizens...but rather citizens of Native Nations within Indian Territory. After the Dawes Act allotted Indian lands to individual tribal members the "surplus" Indians lands were opened to American settlement...in 1906 Oklahoma became a state, most tribal nations were dissolved, and Indians (in Indian Territory) became U.S. citizens. It was a quintessential "Americanization" process. The goal of this legislation was to destroy native political autonomy and self-determination and create individual land owners...it was thought that tribal members would then become "American" and no longer maintain tribal affiliation.
