1) Osmosis is the process which cause the movement of substance like co, ions like potassium & magnesium and water move in high concentration to lower concentrations.

2) plasma membrane is called selectively permeable membrane because This membrane allows the entry and exit of any substance it means it select substance to allow for process and thus protect the cell from foreign particle.

Information

  • Plasma membrane is called selectively permeable membrane and cytoplasm is called semi permeable membrane and Lysosomes are called Suicidal bag and power house of the cell is Mitochondria

  • Cell are of two types eukaryotic and prokaryotic in which eukaryotic lacks all membrane bound like mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, ER etc. but have a plasma membrane made up of phospholipid.

Question : How do substances like Co, and

water move in and out of the cell?Discuss

Answer: The substances like CO2 and water move in and out of a cell by diffusion from the region of high concentration to low concentration. When the concentration of CO2 and water is higher in external environment than that inside the cell, CO2 and water moves inside the cell. When the concentration outside the cell becomes low and it is high inside the cell, they moves out.

Question : Why is the plasma membrane?

called a selectively permeable

membrane?

Answer : The plasma membrane is called a selectively permeable membrane as it permits the movement of only certain molecules in and out of the cells. Not all molecules are free to diffuse. If plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down then molecules of some substances will freely move in and out of the cells.

As the plasma membrane acts as a mechanical barrier, the exchange of material from its surroundings through osmosis or diffusion in a cell won’t take place. Consequently, the cell would die due to the disappearance of the protoplasmic material. It allows hydrophobic molecules and small polar molecules diffuse through the lipid layer, but does not allow ions and large polar molecules cannot diffuse through the membrane.

I hope it helps you :-)
