  • 1) The Himalayan mountain range and Tibetan plateau have formed as a result of the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate which began 50 million years ago and continues today. 225 million years ago (Ma) India was a large island situated off the Australian coast and separated from Asia by the Tethys Ocean.

  • 2) Himalayas are very much useful to India in many ways. It acts as a climatic barrier that prevents the cold wind from other parts of Asia and also provides rainfall in Northern India by preventing the monsoon winds. It also acts as a defense barrier in the Northern end as it prevents the country from foreign invasions.

  • 3) The three parallel ranges of the Himalayas are: Himadri (Great or Inner Himalayas) It is the most continuous range. The northernmost range is called the Himadri.

  • 4) The Northern Plain was formed by the deposits brought in by the three major rivers and their tributaries. Alluvium was deposited at the foothills of the Himalayas for millions of years. These deposits are now the fertile Northern Plains.

  • 5 1) Western Ghats are continuous Chain of hills starting from Tapti valley in the North to Kanyakumari in the South. ... → Eastern Ghats are discontinuous chain of hills from Mahanadi River in north and Vaigai River in the south .

  • 2) The Andaman Islands are located in Bay of Bengal. closer to the countries of Myanmar and Thailand. The Lakshadweep Islands, on the other hand, is located on the Arabian Sea. It is close to the state of Kerala. Andaman and Nicobar Islands were formed due to volcanic eruptions while Lakshadweep are coral islands.

  • 3) The Eastern Coastal plain lies along the east coast of India and is washed by the Bay of Bengal. But the Western Coastal Plain lies along the west coast of India and is washed by The Arabian Sea. ... But the West Coast plain also runs from the north to the south and it is in some places intersected by the mountain ridges.
