1.

Food security is ensured in India on the basis of the two components, i.e., Buffer Stock and Public Distribution System (PDS). Buffer Stock. It is the stock of food grains like wheat and rice procured by the government through Food Corporation of India (FCI).

2.

The people more prone to food insecurity are the followings: (i)The Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and some sections of the OBC's who have either poor land bare or very low land productivity are prone to food insecurity.

3.

The states of Uttar Pradesh (eastern and south-eastern parts), Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra account, for the largest number of food insecure people in the country.

4.

Yes, the green revolution has made India self-sufficient in food grains. India has adopted a new strategy in the field of agriculture. In this, insecticides and pesticides were used which resulted in great production of wheat and rice.

5.

Despite achieving self sufficiency in foodgrains as a result of the Green Revolution, a section of people in India are still without food because of poverty. Thus, landless the labourers, casual urban workers, SCs and STs who are below the poverty line find it impossible to get two square meals a day.

6.

When there is a disaster or a calamity, the production of food grains decreases in the affected area. This in turn creates a shortage of food in the area. Due to the food shortage, the prices go up.

7.

Seasonal hunger is related to cycles of food growing and harvesting. Chronic hunger is a consequence of diets persistently inadequate in terms of quantity and/or quality. Poor people suffer from chronic hunger because of their very low income and in turn inability to buy food even for survival.

8.

To provide food security to the poor, the government has implemented the following

(i) Creating a buffer stock of foodgrains for distribution when and where needed.

(ii) Public Distribution System for making available foodgrains to the poor at highly subsidized rates.

Buffer stock are created :-

(i) A buffer stock of food grains is created by the government, so that it can be distributed in food deficit areas and among the poorer strata of society at a price much lower than the market price.

(ii) Maintaining buffer stock is a step taken by the government in order to ensure food security.
