  • Three hydrocarbons- one alkane (ethane), one alkene (ethene) and one alkyne (ethyne) can be obtained by joining two carbon atoms.
  • Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons as each carbon forms only single bonds. Alkenes and alkynes have carbons with double and triple bonds respectively. These are unsaturated.
  • Unsaturated hydrocarbons are converted to saturated hydrocarbons by hydrogenation or addition of hydrogen.
