Most rivers begin life as a tiny stream running down a mountain slope. They are fed by melting snow and ice, or by rainwater running off the land. The water follows cracks and folds in the land as it flows downhill. Small streams meet and join together, growing larger and larger until the flow can be called a river.

A river can originate as a result of glacier melting, a spring(natural water body from which water comes out naturally with great speed from deep within the earth).
Water being a very good solvent can dissolve almost anything, so over a large period of time (generally 100s of years), erosion of soil, rocks, mountains takes place making path for the river to flow. That is how a river originates and flows.
