1. He made strange clocks - some had a set of dancing figures which sprung out of the dial plate, every time the hour struck. He also made clocks where a ships sails across the face of the clock and showed the flowing up and down of the waves, whenever the pendulum vibrated.

2. ONCE upon a time a tiger was caught in a trap. He tried in vain to get out through the bars, and rolled and bit with rage and grief when he failed.

3. The narrator wanted to go on a 'round-the-world' voyage by following Captain James Cook's route. He started from Plymouth in England, sailed towards Africa and Cape town and finally set sail towards Australia. he wanted to repeat the voyage taken by a sailer 200 yrs ago.

4. James Cook was a naval captain, navigator and explorer who, in 1770, charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on his ship HMB Endeavour. He later disproved the existence of Terra Australis, a fabled southern continent.

5. The king chose the particular hermit because he lived in a wood which he never left, saw no one but simple people and presumably had no desires such as those which the others had possessed. He did not want to intimidate the man by going with his retinue of followers so he went alone.
