Answer:

The string is two thirds (four sixths) of a metre long (66.66 cm)

Fold it exactly in half, so that there are two tails, each one third (two sixths) of a metre long (33.33 cm)

Fold one of those tails in half to form two smaller tails, each one sixth of a metre long (16.66 cm)

Cut the string at the new elbow, removing one sixth of a metre.

You are left with a string three sixths of a metre long, or half a metre (66.66–16.66 = 50 cm)
