Bismillah khan belong to a very simple background. When he was five years old boy, he played 'gilli danda' near a pond in ancient estate of Dumraon in Bihar. He learnt shehnai under his maternal uncle Ali Bux. He took Indian classical music all over the world. Bismillah khan has been winning awards from the age of 14. He got the best performance award at the India Music Conference in 1947. He greeted the nation with shehnai on 1st Independence Day. He was also honoured in Ossaca. In Tehran, an auditorium was named after him. The highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' was conferred to him
