1. In operating a water pump, a resistance of 480 N is overcome by an effort of 72 N. If the distance of the
fulcrum from the point where the resistance acts is 0.2 m, find the distance from the fulcrum, where the effort
is applied.

Effort × Distance of effort from the fulcrum=Load × Distance of load from the fulcrum

72×D=480×0.2

D = (480×0.2)/72

D = 1.33 m

Given :-

Load = 480 N

Effort = 72 N

Distance of load arm from fulcrum = 0.2 m

To Find :-

The distance from the fulcrum, where the effort  is applied.

Analysis :-

Here we are given with the load, effort and the distance of load arm from fulcrum.

In order to find the distance from the fulcrum, substitute the given values such that distance from the fulcrum is equal to load multiplied by distance of load arm from fulcrum divided by the effort.

Solution :-

According to the question,

Effort × Distance of effort from fulcrum = Load × Distance of load arm from fulcrum

Given that,

Load = 480 N

Effort = 72 N

Distance = 0.2 m

Substituting their values,

⇒ 72 × d = 480 × 0.2

⇒ d = 480×0.2 / 72

⇒ d = 96 / 72

⇒ d = 1.33 m

Therefore, he distance from the fulcrum, where the effort  is applied is 1.33 m.
