1.In the above diagram if ‘x’ is a neutral point,
identify the magnetic poles A and B. Explain your answer.

2. Explain the principal behind maglev train.

3. Explain why 'magnetic field lines never intersect with each other'.

4.If a traveller using a compass needle follows the direction of the magnetic needle, would he be able to reach the geographic north pole? Explain in detail.

Answer 1 : The pole from where magnetic field lines emerge is considered as the North pole. On the other note, the pole at which all the field lines merge is considered as the south pole.

  • We can observe that the magnetic field lines are emerging from point A. Hence, it is the North Pole and B is the South Pole.

Answer 2 : The Maglev Trains are levitation train cars. They have magnets in their bottom which is faced to the same pole of other magnets on the concrete guideway beneath it.

  • Like poles repel each other which helps it to move forward and levitate and the opposite poles help in pulling the train car.

Answer 3 : Magnetic field lines are never found to be intersecting because if they would cross each other then at the point of intersection, the North pole of other magnet (if brought towards it) would point towards two directions which is impossible.

  • Also, at the point of intersection it would mean that the two field lines have same strength which is also impossible as the strength of field lines decrease with the increasing distance from the centre.

Answer 4 : No, A traveler using a compass needle following its direction would never reach the geographic North Pole. The reason is outlined as below :-

  • The line connecting North and South pole of a magnet is termed as magnetic axis and the line connecting North and South pole of the geographic is considered as the geographic axis.

  • These axis can never coincide. Hence, A person following the direction of needle will reach the magnetic North pole Not geographic North pole.

 \large \dag Answer 1 》

  • A = North Pole

  • B = South Pole

Explanation :-

As per diagram magnetic field lines are emerging from A therefore it should be North Pole.

Also it is given in the question that point "x" is "neutral point" which means it is not attracted towards any of the poles therefore B must be South Pole for neutralization.

 \large \dag Answer 2 》

Principle behind maglev train is Magnetic Repulsion.

Explanation :-

In Magnetic Levition or Maglev trains float on a guide way due to magnetic repulsion.

Just like same poles repel each other so same poles are used in these which repel each other and help train to move.

☆ Mostly electromagnetism is used to create large magnets instead of using permanent magnets.

 \large \dag Answer 3 》

Magnetic field lines does not intersect at any point because if they do so, then there will be two directions of magnetic field at that point which is not possible.

Explanation :-

We know that tangent to a magnetic field line gives the direction of magnetic field at that point.

If two magnetic field lines intersect at a point then there will be two tangents which give two different direction of magnetic field, which is not possible.

 \large \dag Answer 3 》

No he would not be able to reach the geographic north pole.

Explanation :-

We know that magnetic needle always point towards magnetic North Pole, and if the traveller follows magnetic needle then it takes him to magnetic North Pole.

Also magnetic axis and geographical Axis does not coincide therefore magnetic north pole and Geographic north pole are different.

So if Traveller follows magnetic needle then he will reach magnetic north pole not geographic North Pole
