  • Gaston Roberge's pleasant association with Satyajit Ray, a French-Canadian priest, typically made a remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.
  • Roberge, by Apu triology, was naturally drawn to the published works of Ray. He generously provided a scholarly review in his excellent book, 'Satyajit Ray Essays.
  • Roberge typically came to Calcutta after regarding Ray's classic films and contacted him. Their sincere friendship lasted for almost 22 years, until Ray's apparent death. He said "Where Tagore signed out, Ray took off."
  • At that time, Ray represented the symbol of Indian cinema. Both had invested a great deal on film discussions. One of the established outposts of their meaningful relationship was 'Chitrabani', a social contact and film institute.
