Answer:
Any physical, chemical and biological change in the quality of water is that makes it unsuitable for use is called water pollution.
Causes of water pollution:
There are two sources of water pollution --
● Point sources
● Non-Point sources
Types of water pollution:
● Nutrient pollution
● Groundwater pollution
● Natural pollution
● Oxygen Depletion
● Chemical water pollution
● Oil spillage
● Sewage and waste water
Harmful effects of water pollution:
● Many water bodies near urban areas get highly polluted by dumping of chemicals and garbage. This can cause diseases such as cholera, typhoid, jaundice, etc.
● Polluted water kills aquatic life forms that depend on water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, sea gulls, dolphins and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat.
● Ecosystems can be severely changed or destroyed by water pollution.
● Pollution disrupts the natural food chain as well . Chemicals such as DDT ( Dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane) enter the food chain ,accumulate at each level and disturb the entire food chain. The increase in the concentration of toxic chemicals in a food chain is known as biomagnification.
Prevention and control of water pollution
● Always throw garbage in waste bins. Always look for the correct waste bin. If there is none around, please take it home and put it in your trash can.
● Use water wisely. This will significantly prevent water shortages and reduce the amount of dirty water that needs treatment.
● Do not throw chemicals, oils ,paints , and medicines down the sink drain or in toilet. In many cities, your local environment office can help with the disposal of medicines and chemicals.
