1)no photosynthesis occur during night due to absence of sunlight. so the plants start taking up oxygen and releases co2. if we sleep under a tree the amount of co2 is more which can affect our health

The answers are as follows.

1.) It is advisable not to sleep under a tree (in the night) because plants perform respiration at night and they take in oxygen and give out CO2. This may cause discomfort or probably suffocation in the person.

2.) Light energy activates the green plant pigment chlorophyll  to initiate photosynthesis

3.) 6CO₂ + 6H₂O --------> C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂  (in the presence of sunlight & chlorophyll) .

4.) From mouth to anus, the order is

a) pharynx, h)oesophagus, d)stomach, b)pyloric sphincter, f)small intestine, e)caecum, g)colon  and c)rectum

5) (a) Hydrochloric acid

6) Define

a) Ingestion: Consumption of a substance (like food or water) by an organism. In higher animals, it is achieved by means of eating or drinking

b) Egestion:  Discharge/excretion/expulsion of undigested (food) material from the body.

c) Extracellular digestion: Digestion of food substances outside the body by means of secreting digestive enzymes followed by absorption of the molecules by the cells/body via passive diffusion, phagocytosis, etc. Example: Saprobionts.

d) Absorption: Process by which the nutrients produced after digestion of food is assimilated/taken in by the body cells.

7.) The function of

a) Incisor – Cutting food in the mouth.

b) Tongue – Organ for taste & speech. It also helps to mix food while chewing food.

c) Pancreas – Production of digestive juices (pancreatic juices) that digests fats. Also, produces the hormones (insulin and glucagon) responsible for blood sugar levels.

d) HCl – Aids in digestion of food in the stomach.

e) Oesophagus (food pipe) – Moves the semi-digested food from the mouth to the stomach by its peristaltic movements.

f) Bile – Secreted by the liver, this bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid brings about the digestion of fats/lipids .

8.) Dental formula of man

Milk teeth/Deciduous teeth: 212/212 or 2102/2102

2 incisors, 1 canine, 0 premolar and 2 molars on each side of each jaw

Permanent teeth = 2123/2123.

2 incisors, 1 canine, 2 premolar and 3 molars on each side of each jaw

9.) Dietary fibre results in bulking of the faeces (increases faecal weight) as they absorb water and thus ease constipation.

11.) [hepatic portal,excess glucose,subcutaneous,amino acids,deamination,fatty acids,glycerol,glycogen,proteins, lymphatic,absorbed,carried, empties]

The foods digested and absorbed by the gut are transported in two ways. Simple sugar, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, etc. are carried to the liver by the hepatic portal vein. The liver converts any excess glucose into insoluble glycogen which can be temporarily stored. The amino acids circulate in the body and they serve as building blocks of proteins. The amino acids are broken in which the nitrogen containing amino group is removed (deamination) and converted into urea for excretion. The glycerol and fatty acids absorbed by the gut are transported mainly through the intestinal villi and lymphatic system. The thoracic duct of the lymphatic system empties into large veins the synthesis of certain compounds in the body cells. The excess quantity of fat gets deposited chiefly below the skin as subcutaneous fat.

12.) Scientific name for fat or oil – Lipids

13.) Nutrient group containing meat, eggs and beans – Proteins

14.) Type of acids that make up proteins –  Amino acids

15.) Finger like projections of small intestine – Villi

16.) Scientific name of fibre – Roughage which is nondigestible carbohydrates (chiefly non-starch polysaccharides)

17.) Nutrient group containing sugar, starch and cellulose – Carbohydrates

18.) Green chemical that breaks fats into smaller globules – Bile

19.) The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine

20.) Muscular contractions of digestive tract – Peristalsis

21.) Chemical that breaks food into smaller particles - Enzymes

22.) Gastric juice is found in the stomach.

23.) Bladder that stores bile – Gall bladder

24.) Fats are broken down in fatty acids and glycerol.

25.) Example of simple sugar – Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆)
