1. James Mill divided Indian history into three periods :
*Hindu
*Muslim
*British
He divided Indian history into these periods by taking in concern of the rulers at that time. He meant that before British rule India was dark with conflicts between different religion rulers. He thought that with British rule India was enlightened. Though this was widely accepted it has criticism. Because
*James has divided by the religion of rulers
*When we talk about Hindu period, Muslim people are also present and in Muslim period Hindus are also present.
*Rulers belonged to many faiths, so it is wrong to divide history into religions
*A period in history cannot be characterized only through religion of rulers, but the lives & practices of all people has to be considered.

collectorate, the commissioner’s office, the provincial
secretariats, the lawcourts – all had their record rooms.
Specialised institutions like archives and museums were
also established to preserve important records.
