Explanation:

1 kg of ice at zero degree celsius is be continuously heated through an electric heater of 1 kilowatt assuming that all the heat is transmitted to ice calculate the time interval is second for converting ice to water at hundred degree celsius specific latent heat of fusion of ice is equal to 336 joule per gram specific heat of capacity of water is equal to 4.2 joule per gram degree celsius

Explanation:

Heat energy required for ice to melt completely at 0oC = mL = 1 x 336000 = 336000 J

Power of heater = 1 kW = 1000 J s-1

Therefore, Time required = Heat energy required / Power of heater = 336000 / 1000 = 336 s

(ii) Heat energy required by water to get heated from 00C to 100oC = mc x rise in temperature

= 1 x 4200 x (100 - 0) = 420000 J

time required = heat energy required / Power of heater = 420000/1000 = 420 s.
