Cooperatives are associations whose objectives are to meet the economic,  social, and cultural requirements of their members. Regardless of how many shares they possess, every member of a cooperative has an equal number of votes. There are many different legal structures for cooperatives available in various parts of the world.

India's cooperative credit institutions fall under a three-tier classification system.

  • The bottom are Primary Credit Societies,
  • the centre are Central Co-operative Societies,
  • and the top are State Co-operative Societies.
