What is an electromagnet? Draw a diagram with an electromagnet connected in a circuit. How will you make an electromagnet?

Give two advantages of electromagnet

\huge\mathfrak\red{Answer}

Definition of electromagnet is given

An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current. Electromagnets usually consist of wire wound into a coil.

How will you make an electromagnet?

Electromagnets can be created by wrapping a wire around an iron nail and running current through the wire. The electric field in the wire coil creates a magnetic field around the nail.

It's advantages

The main advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet is that the magnetic field can be quickly changed by controlling the amount of electric current in the winding. However, unlike a permanent magnet that needs no power, an electromagnet requires a continuous supply of current to maintain the magnetic field.

{ \huge{ \pink{ \mathfrak{Question : }}}}

1) What is an electromagnet?

2) Draw a diagram with an electromagnet connected in a circuit.

3) How will you make an electromagnet?

{ \huge{ \pink{ \mathfrak{ Answer: }}}}

1) An electromagnet is a magnet consisting of a coil of an insulated copper wire wound around a soft iron rod that is magnetised only when an electric current is passed through the coil.

2) SEE THE ATTACHMENT

3) Wind an insulated copper wire around an iron nail so that it forms a coil. Connect the free ends of the coil of wire to the two terminals of a battery through a switch. Now, place some steel pins near one of the ends of the iron nail. Switch 'ON' the current. You find that steel pins cling to the tip of the nail [Fig. 14.14(a)]. Switch 'OFF" the current, the steel pins fall from the iron nail [Fig. 14.14(b)].

{SEE THE ATTACHMENT}

You find that an electromagnet is a temporary magnet. Its magnetism lasts only till a current passes through its coil. Once the current stops, the iron nail loses its magnetism.

Note: While testing the working of an electro magnet, the current in the coil should be switched 'ON' only for a few seconds at a time.

(1)Give two advantages of electromagnets over permanent magnets.

(2) What type of magnet is used in an electric bell?

{ \huge{ \pink{ \mathfrak{ Answer: }}}}

(1)

  • The magnetism of an electromagnet can be 'switched on' or 'switched off when desired. This is not possible with a permanent magnet.

  • An electromagnet is stronger than a permanent magnet.

(2) U-shaped magnet or electromagnet is used in electric bell.
