Central Pollution Control Board analysis of pollution loads in Ganga pre-lockdown (March 15-21) and lockdown (March 22-April 15) period showed that Ganga water was found suitable for bathing at most monitoring centres. On April 27, the CPCB said that the Ganga water can support aquatic life. However, it certainly is not clean enough for drinking. It also pointed out that the nitrate concentration of the Ganga water reduced too.
Dr PK Mishra, Professor at Chemical Engineering and Technology at IIT-BHU, Varanasi, said there has been a 40-50 per cent improvement in the quality of water in Ganga, news agency ANI reported on April 5.
Sushant Mishra, chief of Sanga Seva Nidhi in Varanasi told the Quint the level of water in Ganga has risen, its quality improved, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water has increased too. The quint report said that in Varanasi’s Nagwa Nala, the measure of DO increased from 3.8 ML/L on March 6 to 6.8 ML/L on April 4, which enhances the natural cleansing mechanism of the water.
Near the Dhobi Ghat in Kanpur, the Biochemical Oxygen Demand, an indicator of organic pollution, is still higher like in many other stretches of the rives in UP than in West Bengal.
Experts, however, have warned that the improvement in the environment may be short-lived. Things may turn to their previous state as the lockdown is lifted and economic activity resumed.
