Answers
Ans1 :- Land has ample no. of uses. It is used to produce food, timber, minerals, fibre and energy etc. These are the things important for our existence.
Food and Fibre:
Agriculture is done on the land which provides us food and clothes. Similarly forests on land are useful and necessary for the existence of humans and other species.
Mineral resources:
Oil and minerals are extracted from beneath the land which is used in varied ways by human beings.
Timber:
Trees we plant on the land provides us with timber which is used in furniture, building houses and making paper etc.
Energy:
The rivers flowing on land and coal extracted from land etc are the sources of energy.
Ans2 :- The total forest cover is 708,273 square km, which is 21.54% of the total area of the country.
Ans3 :- Human activities responsible for soil erosion are -
a. Excessive use of fertilisers, pesticides. Over grazing, deforestation .
b. Over irrigation increases the salt deposits in the soil .
c. Mining-leaves deep scars and traces of over-burdening .
d. Dumping of industrial effluents It effects the overall land under cultivation and in turn production. Excessive practise of shifting cultivation , even ploughing in the wrong manner causes soil erosion.
Ans4 :- A shelter belt is a plantation usually made up of one or more rows of trees or shrubs planted in such a manner as to provide shelter from the wind and to protect soil from erosion. They are commonly planted around the edges of fields on farms. If designed properly, windbreaks around a home can reduce the cost of heating and cooling and save energy.
Ans5 :- Crop rotation involves growing a nitrogenous rich crop like a leguminous crop between two successive cereal crops. Such intermediate crops help to restore the nitrogenous content of the soil which is depleted when the cereal crops are grown. This rich soil will then be able to support the next cropping season.
