Earth Day is celebrated in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Many communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on environmental issues. The first Earth Week was in Philadelphia in 1970. Earth Day Network is a group that wants to become the coordinator of Earth Day globally. They say that Earth Day is now observed on April 22 on almost every country on Earth.

More than 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day. This year, on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, over a billion people in over 180 nations will participate in Earth Day in one way or another. This means all those people will be doing something "green" that day. That means they will do something that will be good for the environment.
