William Blake wrote this exceptional poem called Chimney Sweeper. He used many metaphorical terms describing the sorrow of a young boy.

Explanation:

  • The boy feels lonely and miserable after the death of his mother. His father asks him to sweep chimneys. His white hair is also shaved. All the boy sees is soot everywhere.

  • He cries doing all of this work and feels the pain of children who come from poor families.

  • This six stanza poem has a very strong and powerful message to it regarding child labor and the importance of mother in any child's life.

  • The child also hates his clothes since he feels like his uniform reminds him of being handed over to death by his father.
