1 mole of an ideal gas at 500K expands isothermally until its volume becomes three

times. Find amount of work done and heat absorbed in the process?

(Use R = 8.3 Jmol-1K-1 and ln 3 = 1.1)

The work done on the isothermal system will be -2739 Joules.

Step-by-step process

Given:

Temperature= 500K

Number of moles = 1

Let the initial volume be V_{1}

Then,final volume ;V_{2} = 3V_{1}

To find:

Work done

Work done in an isothermal process is given by :

Work done = -nRT ln(V_{2} / V_{1})

Putting the values, we get

Work done; W= -1 x 8.3 x 300 ln(3V_{1}/ V_{1})

Work done= -2490 x 1.1

Thus Work done on the isothermal system will be -2739 Joules.

The minus sign in -2739 indicates that the reaction is exothermic.
