1. Canal irrigation is not suitable in south India because of the following reasons : The undulating relief and hard rocks make it difficult to dig canals and Wells. There is a little percolation of rain water due to hard rock structure and ground water is not available in large quantities.

2. Irrigation in India helps improve food security, reduce dependence on monsoons, improve agricultural productivity and create rural job opportunities.

1. Most of the rivers in South India are non perennial. Deccan Plateau consisting of hard igneous and metamorphic rocks make it difficult to dig. So, states in South India are not suitable for canal irrigation.

2. Only 30% of the cultivated areas receives sufficient annual rainfall wild 40% receives less than 75 cm of annual rainfall.

  • Ravi crops need irrigation as most parts of India receives no rain during winter.

  • Some crops like rice, jute, sugarcane need more water. So, India needs enhanced irrigation facilities to get maximum yield for the same land.
