What you can learn in this unit
Practice English letters and sounds at your level.
Practicing English letters and sounds in the classroom with students.
Planning English sound, letter and word activities.
1 English pronunciation
In the first activity, you will work through an English pronunciation guide at your level.
Activity 1: English letters and sounds
English letter names can be very different from the sounds they make in words.
Say the name of this English letter 'b'. It will be pronounced something like 'bee'. What are some English words starting with this letter? You can probably think of 'bag', 'bus' or 'bell'. Speak these words out loud.
When you speak these words aloud, you will hear that the sound of this letter is something like 'bh'. Try to speak only the sound of 'b', and listen to the sound in words like 'bag' and 'boy'. Hear the difference between the letter name and the letter sound.
Try this again and say the name of the English letter 'r'.
