Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and Sulphur trioxide (SO₃) gases are evolved during the decomposition reaction of Ferrous sulphate.

  • Due to heat application, a complex chemical compound break downs into (two or more)comparatively simpler substances. This reaction is known as decomposition reaction.
  • This decomposition reaction can be also observed when we apply heat to ferrous sulphate.
  • Chemical reaction :

2FeSO₄ (s) ---Heat----> Fe₂O₃ (s) + SO₂ (g) + SO₃ (g)

  • Among the three products of the above mentioned chemical reaction, only two of them are gases. (ie. SO₂ or Sulphur dioxide , SO₃ or trioxide).
