In biology, there are three different types of solutions that cells can be in: isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic.
IN HYPERTONIC:
Cell loses its water molecules.
Hypertonic solution is the one that contains more concentration of solutes relative to the solute concentration in the cytoplasm of the cell. Thus, when cells are put in such a solution, water molecule shift from their higher concentration to their lower concentration. This movement of the water molecule is called osmosis, and it is because everything in the universe tries to reach an equilibrium. In reality, water molecules seek to regulate their concentration in both extra cellular and intracellular environment. Thus cell gives its water to the solution it was placed in. It then loses water molecule and shrunk.
IN HYPOTONIC:
Remember, water moves from a region of low osmolarity to a region of high osmolarity. In this case, since the extra cellular fluid has low osmolarity, the water would rush into the cell. The cell would then expand and eventually lyse or burst.
IN ISOTONIC:
Isotonic solutions have the same water concentration on both sides of the cell membrane. If you place an animal or a plant cell in a hypertonic solution, the cell shrinks, because it loses water ( water moves from a higher concentration inside the cell to a lower concentration outside ).
