On 2 December 2015, the south Indian city of Chennai (Madras) witnessed devastating floods, after receiving the heaviest rainfall it had witnessed in a century. As much as 272 mm of rain drenched the city in a 24-hour period.

The waters marooned large parts of the city for several days and rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of electricity and mobile connectivity, but the city's citizenry rose magnificently to the occasion in a massive volunteering effort.

Some pitched in by coordinating with the government. Others helped through non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Journalists Karthik Subramanian and PM Naveen spoke to some of them a year after the experience.

Answer:

A narrative description about the rains in November.

Explanation:

It was during the month of November when usually it is winter. Due to some change in climatic conditions, it started raining unexpectedly and within minutes the roads were all fully flooded with rain water. All of a sudden there was chaos everywhere. People living at the ground level were completely devastated as rain water mixed with drainage water had entered their houses and they no longer were able to do anything about it. All these happened in the neighbouring street due to bad drainage system. As the drainages in our street was perfectly done there was no much floods in the street. People of neighbouring street were so helpless that they started screaming for help. Evacuation team soon  started evacuating the people who were mostly living in the ground floors. Some of us from our street volunteered to help them by distributing food packets to people who were rescued from that street. Camps were setup and we made them stay in the camps, gave them blankets and necessary things. We also provided food and other things for the people who were stuck in the upper floors of buildings. Everyone from our street volunteered themselves to give food and other commodities to people who were evacuated. The condition was so critical that some of the old people and small kids even fell ill due to ingesting the drain water. Medical treatment were immediately given and we made sure that everyone is safe. We also made sure to rescue animals from that street. Finally after a long wait of patience, the condition settled down and we started helping our neighbours to clean their houses and streets. They all were very greatful for how we helped them in their difficult times.
