Imagine you have a block of wood in front of you.

Imagine your work is to push that block across the floor.

Will you push it along the direction that you want it to move or normal to that direction?

So, you would not have done work if you apply force normally right? This is the intuition behind the principle of work. It is as simple as that.

You do work if you apply some force and displace the block in that direction due to the force. This product has been characterised as the measure of work.
